Like all vintage spec non master volume amps, the more you turn up the volume, the more tube overdrive you get. Experiment with turning the amp up and lowering your guitar volume to get clean tones, then you can turn use your guitar volume to get different shades of overdrive.  This amp is best used by utilizing the volume and tone knobs on your guitar a lot.

The drive toggle switch will give you more overdrive, brightness and touch sensitivity. You can use it to get more gain or treble at lower volume settings and give you even more gain at higher volumes.  This switch will get you into Mucho tube distortion with the volume knob up between 8-12.

The “Standard Spec” position is with the toggle switch flipped over toward the volume knob.  The middle setting is the “No NFB” position that defeats the Negative Feedback (NFB) to bring in more gain and brightness.  The “High Gain” position is with the switch flipped over toward the pilot lite.  This position adds a small capacitor to the cathode for even more gain and brightness.

Input 1 is the high sensitivity input and Input 2 is the low sensitivity input.  Volume goes to 12!!!

You can try a 12ay7 or 5751 preamp tube for more clean headroom.

El Charro
The Texwest El Charro is a customized spec of the traditional 5F1 Narrow Panel Tweed Champ amplifier.   El Charro is intended to pay full tribute to this classic design while making a few subtle enhancements.   It is built with a slightly larger cabinet than the original 5F1 to get a more open bass response and avoid the small boxy sound of the original.  A 3 position drive switch is added to both brighten up the amp and add more gain, while preserving the original 5F1 circuit in its “standard spec” position.
